Blog of Jakub Regulski describing the phenomenon of nepotism Nepotism (illustrator – Jakub Regulski)

The word nepotism derives from the Latin word "nepos," which means nephew. Nepotism is one form of favoritism based on kinship, which is defined as the practice of giving preferential treatment to family members and relatives, usually by hiring them instead of more qualified candidates, offering them preferential terms of employment, or offering them promotions. Nepotism is one form of favoritism that can lead to unfair and unjustified advantages for certain individuals who are given special consideration. Such persons are precisely relatives, because family connections are an indicator of actions of a nepotistic nature. Nepotism is often seen as an unethical practice that undermines the principles of equal opportunity.

One of the main problems with nepotism is that it creates an unfair advantage for people related to those in positions of power. This means that these individuals can be given opportunities even if they are not qualified or capable enough to handle them, which often leads to resentment among employees who feel left out or undervalued because they do not have connections within the company. The consequences of nepotism for a company can be very serious. The most common are a violation of the sense of justice among employees, loss of the company's image, deterioration of the financial situation, reduced quality of work or high employee turnover.
