A whistleblower is usually an employee who decides to expose the activities of a company or institution which may be fraudulent or illegal. Such activity usually bears the hallmarks of embezzlement and fraud, acts of corruption, and deliberate violations of regulations which take place in the organization in which he/she works.

Such reporting can be internal and external. In the first case, the employee reports the irregularities to the ownership structure, Supervisory Board or Board of Directors of the company. In the second case, the notification takes place outside the company, most often to law enforcement, control, supervisory authorities or even the public. The honorable and courageous attitude of whistleblowers is considered one of the most effective tools for detecting and fighting irregularities and pathologies in the workplace. At the core of a whistleblower's actions is usually the common good of employees including their lives, health, safety, occupational health, financial security and transparency.
